The Helena Ladies Auxiliary was founded in June of 1961. The purpose of this organization was then and still is to provide aid to the members of the Helena Volunteer Fire Department. The Auxiliary started out with a simple designation, "We as a body, and as individuals, will assist the Helena Firemen to the best of our ability." This holds as true today as it did in June of 1961.
Originally the Firefighters of Helena were named the Helena Firefighters Auxiliary, until the department grew and eventually became the Helena Volunteer Fire Department. However, they did not want to abandon their roots, so the community and firefighters spouses stepped up and the Helena Ladies Auxiliary was formed.
The original members were: Mrs. Kathryn Demers, Mrs. Ruth M. Ely, Mrs. Kathryn Derouchie, Mrs. Virginia Beckstead, Mrs. Mildred Shope. Their Inaugural Chief was Louis Demers, and their first president was Mrs. Virginia Beckstead.
To this day the Ladies Auxiliary is a fundamental and integral part to the community of Helena and the Helena Volunteer Fire Department. Oftentimes the members of the Helena Volunteer Fire Department work with the Ladies Auxiliary, more often than not, the Ladies Auxiliary works independently of the Fire Department. In doing so they hold a number of yearly community events such as: the annual cabbage roll sale, craft fairs, psychic readings, music bingo, pancake breakfast.
The current roster of the Helena Ladies Auxiliary has 9 volunteer members. These 9 individuals are members of the local communities, They are mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and daughters. They are dedicated to the cause of helping the surrounding communities as well as the fire department all while maintaining home lives, careers, and personal lives.
